This Build a Bioreactor Kit guides students through the design and manufacture of a bioreactor which can then be used to process milk or whey using an immobilised enzyme. The basis of the experiment is the hydrolysis of lactose found in milk. The reaction is monitored using diabetic urine testing strips which give an indication of the concentration of glucose present.Student worksheets give an outline of the required features of a bioreactor - the rest is up to you! The teacher's notes give background information and guidelines on how to use the kit. Detailed instructions of how to immobilise the enzyme and ideas for further investigations are also included. Please note that none of our enzyme kits are to be considered as being of Food Grade Standard. They are only suitable for use in education. The kit includes:Plastic BottlesFilter Funnels3-Way TapsT-ConnectorsSyringesSilicone TubingGlass TubingRubber Bings with 1 holeSieveGauzeGlucose Testing StripsLactase (B-Galactosidase)Calcium ChlorideSodium AlginateSufficient materials for five students/groups.In addition to the included materials student groups will also need the following:200ml UHT milkDistilled waterPhotocopies of the included worksheet2 Beakers Glass stirring rod100ml measuring cylinderAquarium Pump and some means of regulating the air flow e.g. air tapHot glue gunScissorsSoldering IronRetort Stand with 2 bosses and clamps
